Win a Ticket to the 2010 A.H.A Gala

The generosity and care of a couple great people has humbled me today.  Through a very thoughtful donation, I am pleased to offer our friends and readers a chance to WIN a ticket to our AHA gala!  This is the easiest contest, I swear.  All we’re asking for is your name and that you post or tweet about the upcoming event.  That’s it!  In the form below, please fill in [...]

Excited Yet!? The Gala’s almost here!

The last time I had a countdown staring me in the face this hard, was in 2005 as my wedding drew near. Now, five years and two months later, I'm just as excited and anxious. The gala, as of today, is TWENTY-ONE days away! Don't have your ticket yet? You better get on board!

What I Hope I Never Lose

This week has been brought to me by the number 25(as in days until the gala), and the letter O for “overwhelmed”. Can we talk? *sigh* From writing for all these different sites to simply responding to emails, I’ve had a hard time staying on track because I have been beating myself up, something serious. If I mailed something a day later than I said I would, I was upset [...]

A Different Kind of Adoption

I have a hard time with the belief that African-Americans do not adopt , because I've lived the opposition. I firmly believe that unbeknownst to the mainstream, we are actually doing the majority of adopting. So why isn't it headline news? Because it is completely unofficial.

Speak up, Shut up, or Shut down.

Are we, the infertility community, too sensitive? Are our feelings the responsibility of those around us? Is it fair to superimpose our emotional baggage onto those who are unfamiliar with infertility?

Who I am and Who Infertility has Tried to Make Me

The hardest thing about advocacy is knowing that underneath all of your fighting and pushing for others...you still have your own heart to contend with. It still yearns for you to pay attention to it, and create change internally. Your own desires can...

The EggShelf: “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” by Rebecca Skloot

"Patients believed what doctors said..."Especially black patients in public wards", she writes." How The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks increased my passion for Reproductive Health Awareness, and a need to engage more African Americans in medical literacy.

I Hate the Stirrups

Stirrups, Polyps, Thyroid, Oh My! "All I want to know, is why am I just now hearing about it. Surely they saw this when they looked 2 months ago? Well we are here now. This is the present and evidently, this polyp is in the present..."

That Black Chick…and How she Caused Infertility

I’ve been her a lot. In fact, MOST of my friends have had their experiences being “that” black girl before. THAT black girl is the stereotypical chick.  The neck-rollin, lip-smackin, “GIRRL, LET ME TELL YOU”, chick.  We avoid her at all costs. The Sheneneh, the Mammy, the Sapphire…we work hard at not being her.  We cringe when she speaks out in class, and we disassociate ourselves from her the minute [...]

The EggShelf: “Here and Now” by Kimberla Lawson Roby

It wasn't until I was nearing the end of the book that I recalled my having read it years ago. The fact that I so quickly forgot the subplot of infertility, reminded me of how oblivious we are to infertility until we've encountered it ourselves. Which made this read all the more endearing to me.
